Who? Remembers Sears?

I mean! the original sears?

When I was a kid. I remember going to Sears in Cleveland, Ohio USA. Both Eastside & Westside locations in the inner city. YES! In the inner city! Before they moved to the suburbs.

It was a time when? Most of the products/items were (as I understand it to be!) overruns of National manufacturers and Sears bought them and put their name (on some of them) on it.

Sears was back then. What Walmart is today. A one stop, one shop store. Some exceptions. No drug/pharmacy department, no gas station/auto repair shop (as I recall).

Then somewhere between the 70’s & the 80’s! Sears went by way of: “if you can’t beat ’em!”  “join ’em!”.  In other words! Sears “sold out!”.

And now we are seeing an agonizing demise of an American institution. Changes in consumer tastes, convenience, styles, so on.

Not to mention! “GREED!”

K-mart is no better!

REMEMBER WHEN GOING TO THE STORE WAS WITHIN WALKING DISTANCE?

With all these retailers! Closing up shop!

I can remember when my mom wanted me to go to the store which was down the street from us where my parent and I lived. so was the drug store, hardware store, so on.

If we wanted a big ticket item? We had my sisters drive my mom and me to the catalog showroom stores. Or take a bus and go downtown and those big department stores.

Now with some stores that were time tested. Are not slowly. going away. But! Not with the board of directors! Getting their share of “Take the money and run!” job!

For those of you who may not know? What is a “Catalog showroom” store? Depending on the store! You would come in, either the store had items on display. Or You would walk up to a table, go through the catalog they had. Write down your order, present the order to the clerk. She would go in the back, fill your order, bring it to the front, pay for your order, and leave.

We had “our”” discount stores”. And “every day” discount stores. Not much difference in the two. But! HEY! saving money! Is saving money!

The 5 cent & $10..00 stores! There’s a list of them! Some in different parts of the USA! Some National.

Some of them were as well! Within walking distance. But those were small 5 & the 10’s!

It just seems like! Everything! Keeps changing! But not for the better!
